Mike Shinoda sinh ra trong gia đình có bố mang hai dòng máu Nhật-Mĩ,ông Leslie Shinoda và bà Kim,một phụ nữ mang hai dòng máu Hungary-Nga. Mike lớn lên ở Agoura, California, ngoại ô Los Angeles, nơi anh cư trú đến trước tuổi trưởng thành. Mike có một em trai (sinh năm 1979) tên là Jason, và Mike hay gọi em mình là "Jay".

Ngay trước khi tốt nghiệp, ban nhạc (ở thời điểm này có tên là Hybrid Theory) có thêm một ca sĩ thứ hai là Chester Bennington, thay thế cho Mark Wakefield.
Chỉ với sáu bản EP đã được phát hành dưới một cái tên mới trước khi họ buộc phải thay đổi tên ban nhạc một lần nữa - và vì vậy đã đưa đến việc thông qua rằng Shinoda cùng với những thành viên khác trong ban nhạc tự gọi họ là "Lincoln Park" theo như đề nghị của Chester Bennington.
